How to Change Startup Programs in Windows 7

With the release of Windows 7, Microsoft has made several changes to the company's operating system. Startup program settings are similar to those of previous operating systems. Startup programs are saved in a specific folder on the hard drive. When the operating system boots, links listed in this folder start their respective applications. Changing settings for current startup applications is accomplished through the system configuration tool.

Difficulty: Moderate

    Add a Link to the Startup Folder

  1. 1

    Click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs." Right-click the "Startup" folder in the menu and select "Open All Users." This option opens the folder for all users on the computer. Choose "Explore" to open the folder for the currently logged-in user only.

  2. 2

    Right-click the folder or file you want started when the computer boots. Select "Copy" from the menu.

  3. 3

    Right-click any white space in the "Startup" folder you opened in Step 1. Select "Paste" from the menu list. The program will now open the next time you start the computer.

  4. Change Current Startup Programs

  5. 1

    Click the Windows "Start" button and type "msconfig" in the search text box. This opens the System Configuration console.

  6. 2

    Click the "Startup" tab. This gives you a view of all the programs installed as startup options on your computer.

  7. 3

    Check boxes of the applications you want to start when you boot the computer. For programs you no longer want to start, clear the check box.

  8. 4

    Click "Apply" and close the configuration window. A popup window will ask if you want to reboot the computer. Click "Restart" to reboot the computer and save the changes

How to Mail Holiday Cards Abroad

Things You'll Need:

* Family Photographs
* Holiday Greeting Cards
* CD Players
* Printers
* Rob McConnell Big Band Christmas CD
* Sing-Along Carols CD
* Windham Hill Carols CD
* Postage Stamps
* Address Labels
* Printer Paper
* Home Computers

Keep your list of people to send holiday cards to on your computer. When it's time to send the cards, print out self-stick labels, which are available in many styles and colors. Update your list whenever you receive a card.

Write a Happy New Year letter with your family's news to put in each card - you can use the same one in all of your cards if you keep the information general. Use pretty holiday stationery. Include a family photo as an added treat.

Keep up your holiday spirit while doing the cards by sipping cocoa and listening to carols.

Note that the post office requires envelopes to be no smaller than 3 1/2 by 5 inches. Cards larger than 6 1/8 by 11 1/2 inches and thicker than 1/4 inch need additional postage.

Weigh your cards before sending. Postage for the first half-ounce is 60 cents, and it's 50 cents for each additional half-ounce.

Allow a minimum of seven days for delivery. Two weeks is usually your best bet for timely delivery.

Make sure that the address is clear and correct. Include the English name of the destination country.

Mark the envelope "Airmail."

Note that decorating the envelope with holiday stickers or drawings may delay your mail in some countries.

How to Make Holiday Cards for Kids

Make a holiday card just for kids.

christmas greeting card image by Attila Toro from

During the holidays, often a whole family receives one holiday card from another friend or family member. Rarely, however, do the kids in the family get their very own holiday cards. This holiday season, change your card-giving tradition and send individual cards to the kids you know. This holiday card project doubles as an ornament the recipient can assemble and hang on a tree or door. The greeting card has a front window that displays all the pieces needed to make a holiday tree. Even though the card looks complex, the craft skills required to assemble the holiday tree are minimal.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sheet of blue card stock, 8.5" x 11"
  • Craft knife
  • Ruler
  • Green, yellow, brown and red card stock
  • Scissors
  • Piece of dark string, 6"
  • Small, golden seed beads
  • Snack-size plastic zipper bag
  • Invisible tape
  • Envelope, 6" x 9"
  1. 1

    Fold the blue piece of card stock in half width-wise and open the card.

  2. 2

    Use a craft knife to cut a six-inch by three-inch rectangle out of the front of the card (the border should measure 1.25 inches).

  3. 3

    Cut out the shape of a pine tree from the green card stock. Cut the tree small enough to fit in the plastic bag.

  4. 4

    Cut out a small rectangle from the brown card stock. This is the tree's trunk.

  5. 5

    Cut out a star from the yellow card stock for the tree's topper.

  6. 6

    Cut out small bows from the red card stock, which will serve as tree decorations.

  7. 7

    Form a loop and tie a knot at the ends of the six-inch piece of dark string.

  8. 8

    Place all the holiday tree pieces from Steps 3 to 7, including the golden seed beads, inside the plastic zipper bag and seal. Use invisible tape to secure the plastic bag behind the window you cut from the card.

  9. 9

    Write a holiday greeting on the inside of the card and instructions letting the kids know how to put the holiday tree together. For example, the holiday greeting could read, "Happy holidays! Assemble all the pieces in the bag with a little glue to create your very own holiday tree."

How to Hand-Paint Holiday Cards

Design and hand-paint your own holiday cards as an alternative to store-bought greeting cards. You can make your cards as elaborate or as simple as you desire. Make a set of identical holiday cards or make each card unique.

Places to Promote Your Music & Yourself As a Singer Read more: Places to Promote Your Music & Yourself As a Singer

Although record labels were once the dominant power in the music industry, the availability of recording software and the power of Internet marketing has since enabled independent musicians to release their own music CDs and to market their musical talent without having to sign a recording contract. Major labels may have the financial clout to gain valuable exposure for their signed artists, but they also make creative demands of them, and take a sizable cut of the financial proceeds. As an independent artist, promoting yourself is time-consuming and done on a much smaller scale, but what you lose in financial backing, you make up for with creative control of your material, and the hands-on approach can be artistically rewarding.

Social Networks

  • Maintain a presence on social networking sites. Make regular posts to announce CD releases and live performances, then add audio clips and gig photos to your profile page. Most sites allow you to paste in third-party players that allow visitors to play a selection of your music while they browse your pages. Use this to your advantage by encouraging listeners to paste the player's code onto their own blogs and social networking sites.
  • CD Distributors

  • Contact online CD distributors and have them stock your CDs. CD Baby is the most visible of those that carry independent releases, and it conducts all sales transactions for you, in return for a registration fee and a percentage of each CD sold. Other sites are genre-specific and will only carry your music if it fits in with their niche, so be prepared to have your music reviewed before placement. The upside to this is that much of their website traffic generated includes fans of the genre, so the chance of sales is greater than it might be on a site that accepts everything.
  • Personal Website

  • Put together a website dedicated to your musical activities. If you're looking for session work as a singer, add several diverse audio clips that showcase your ability and versatility, and make sure that links to online retailers that carry your CD are prominently displayed. To encourage interaction and return traffic, update the site regularly with quality content, and add a newsletter sign-up form so that you can grow your mailing list.
  • Live Performances

  • Perform live at every opportunity. As well as helping you perfect your vocal skills, there's still no better way to promote your music than playing it in front of a live audience. Despite the growth of music downloading, people at shows often like to take home a physical CD as a souvenir of the performance, so make sure that you have an attractive CD display box at each venue, so that you can capitalize on the excitement created by your performance.
  • Music Reviewers

  • Submit your music to music review sites. Getting glossy magazine coverage is difficult, especially for an independent musician, but it can be done. Try contacting individual reviewers, rather than blindly sending in CDs to the magazine's editor. If you can develop a little rapport with a contributing writer, there may be more of a chance of landing a review. Don't forget to contact online magazines and blogs who cover music in your genre. Their audience may be smaller, but the competition will be less intense, and a good review can yield valuable quotes and testimonials to add to your website.
  • Radio Stations

  • Submit your CD to independent radio stations. Commercial radio stations don't usually consider submissions from independent artists, so target college, Internet and public radio stations that cater to your genre. Before sending out CDs, contact the music director of stations and ask if you can send a CD to be considered for airplay. If you get a positive response, make sure that you include a bio and a one-sheet with a information about song themes and styles. Mark the envelope "Requested Material" and address it to the person with whom you corresponded. Follow up by checking the station's playlists and whenever you receive airplay, send a note of thanks to the station contact and announce the airplay on your social networking sites.

  • How to Do a Complete System Reinstall

    As you use your operating system, you'll find over time your computer begins to experience a general slowdown. This slowdown is often associated with system clutter, the buildup of device drivers, unused file settings and background support programs. The longer you use the system, the slower it'll run, until you perform a complete system reinstall. A reinstall creates a fresh installation over the old, but that creation is at the cost of your present settings and documents. For a successful reinstall that preserves your documents and settings, you'll need to backup the information first, after which you can reinstall, creating a clean fresh system that utilizes the full capability of your system's hardware.

  • Cyan

  • The color cyan can best be described as a moderate greenish-blue to bluish-green. The origin of the word "cyan" goes back to the late 1800s. This is needed because digital art must be converted from RGB to CMYK color for print.

    How To Handle The Phone Interview

    “Today is yesterday’s pupil.” – - Thomas Fuller

    Recently, hiring managers and recruiters have turned to the phone interview as a method of cutting down their enormous list of applicants to a select few who are eligible for an in-person interview. The method has grown in popularity because it can help make the search process more efficient and also cost-effective. Unfortunately, that means it also creates a bigger obstacle than you would like to deal with if you hope to go on to do the in-person interview. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed at a phone interview. You just have to be aware of how the context of a phone interview means you must do more to make a meaningful connection and impression. Here are a few things to consider as you get ready for that phone interview.

    You used to be able to go into a phone interview expecting a few questions and nice ten minute chat, but nowadays, phone interviews can last between thirty minutes to an hour. So what are you going to talk about for so long? Well, everything you normally would in an in-depth personal interview. The preparation here is very similar to what you would do before showing up to meet the recruiters in person. Likewise, you should also prepare your schedule. Make sure you have plenty of time before and after the time slot so you have flexibility to adjust to a change in schedule.

    Set the Scene

    A phone interview is a little different than an in-person interview because it lets you have a home-field advantage. You can do the interview when and wherever you’d like, within reason of course. This means that you can make yourself as comfortable and prepared as possible, which you wouldn’t be able to do in a meeting room. Try spreading out your notes, resume, and letter of application on your kitchen. By doing this, you can make sure you have all the necessary information within easy reach.

    Observe Phone Etiquette

    This may seem like common sense to you, but you’d be surprised how many horror stories are out there about poor phone interview etiquette. For example, don’t do an interview while you’re in the car or eating lunch. One thing to do is to answer the phone clearly and state your name. This will show the interviewer that you are expecting the scheduled call. It will also save him or her the hassle of asking to speak to you if all you had said was ‘Hello?’ when you picked up. And because you do not have visual clues to help you in following the conversation, don’t be afraid to ask for the interviewer to repeat a question. Similarly, refrain from speaking while the other
    person is speaking. And lastly, be aware of the circumstances that go along with having a phone call. Try to establish a way of getting back in touch if the call drops. If you can remain calm and collected over the phone, think of the success you’ll have at the in-person interview. Good luck!

    Why Is It Important to Constantly Update Antivirus Software? Read more: Why Is It Important to Constantly Update Antivirus Software?

    It is important to constantly update the anti-virus software on a computer because computers are regularly threatened by new viruses. The anti-virus updates contain the latest files needed to combat new viruses and protect your computer.

      Updating Signature Files

    1. Signature files contain the latest list and behavior of known viruses. Anti-virus programs release signature file updates regularly--sometimes daily, sometimes more often--because new viruses are being identified on a daily basis. It is best to configure your anti-virus program to automatically check for updates these updates.
    2. Maintaining the Scan Engine

    3. The scan engine is where the signature files are loaded. It is responsible for scanning and performing actions such as cleaning, quarantining and deleting identified viruses in your computer. Updates on scan engines are intermittent and not as regular as signature files. When a scan engine is updated, it is either to fix a scan engine issue or to make it scan faster, perform better and detect fewer false positives.
    4. Securing Operating Systems

    5. Some anti-virus programs can scan a computer for any vulnerability. Anti-virus software makers have added this feature because security flaws in operating systems are entry points for viruses to hack into the computer. Microsoft's Windows Update automatically checks for vulnerabilities and installs patches on the computer.

    Automatic updates is a Windows feature that allows your computer to automatically check for updates to installed software and drivers. Failure to install relevant updates can negatively impact the functionality of your computer software. Despite how important it is to install these updates, the little pop up boxes that advise you of the updates can be annoying. The only way to delete these annoyances is to completely turn off the automatic updates feature.
